Breastcancer-Dare

Skakel oor na Afrikaans

October is Here. Let’s move with purpose.

As we step into October, a month dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness.

This month is not just about pink ribbons, it’s about real action that brings comfort, dignity, and hope. Wherever you are, reach someone, teach someone, and be a leader of change.

Through the Breast Cancer Dare, Org Meyer is proud to support Helpende Hand Boesemvriendinne. This special project, uses the love of knitting and crocheting to make a practical difference.

Boesemvriendinne provides soft, hand-made breast prostheses to women who have lost their breasts to cancer and cannot afford silicone prostheses or reconstruction.

The goals are simple yet powerful:

  • To gift women in need with soft, hand-crafted breast prostheses
  • To raise awareness of breast cancer
  • To involve communities, especially our elderly, in meaningful, supportive handiwork

  • This October, let’s move for health, strength, memory, and hope. Let’s move for change. Together, we can make a difference for the fighters, the survivors, and the ones we’ve lost.

More about the painted pink campaign

The "PAINTED PINK" Challenge, which runs continuously throughout October, encourages individuals to paint their nails pink as a symbol of their commitment to raising breast cancer awareness. It is a gesture that symbolizes unity, support and the strength of the community in the face of adversity.

The "PAINTED PINK" Challenge is part of a broader movement to encourage early detection, support individuals undergoing treatment, and honor those who have lost their battle with cancer. Participants from all walks of life, including local businesses, schools and community organisations, join hands to make a difference.

Our hope is to see the streets flooded with a sea of pink nails and pink ribbons, all of which serve as pervasive symbols of hope and perseverance. The local community is invited to show their support by taking part in the challenge, challenging someone to join, or making a donation to support the cause.

How does it work?

The Painted pink starts early in the year, with the issuing of challenges.

We ask that you challenge the people around you, especially the "men", to paint their nails Pink with Nail Lacquer.

For the challenge, the person giving the challenge must confirm that he/she will give a Donation for the privilege of challenging someone. When the person receiving the challenge decides not to paint his/her nails pink then we ask him/her to then make a Donation with the same amount that has already been given (matched-giving). Should the person paint his nails pink instead, only the original donation is valid.

With this initiative we not only want to raise money but also raise awareness of early detection. It is important if you think something is wrong to consult a medical doctor. Most cancer is treatable if diagnosed early enough.

Willie-Waldo Kühn's Story

At the age of just 23, Willie received the shocking news of a lump in his chest, marking the beginning of his journey with this disease. It is poignant to mention that both his grandmothers, on his mother’s and father’s side, also had similar battles with breast cancer. Willie underwent surgery to remove the tumor, followed by a painful seven-day wait for the results. The diagnosis was cancer, but fortunately, it was detected early and was not malignant.

A decade later, at the age of 33, Willie discovered another lump, this time in his testicle. His family doctor acted quickly and diagnosed the problem the same day based on blood tests and scans, without needing a biopsy. Two days later, Willie underwent surgery to remove the tumor. The waiting period began again, with the urologist’s words lingering in his mind (“If it is benign, you will receive a call from my office; otherwise, you will receive a call from Gauteng Oncology”). After a week, the call from Gauteng Oncology came.

Willie’s treatment journey began, marked by the incredible support of women fighting breast cancer. Through his struggle, he was strengthened by their encouraging words: “You are almost there, stay the course.”

Inspired by these experiences, Willie launched a campaign. Since 2016, after overcoming cancer, he paints his nails pink every October. He does this to honor those who lost their battle with the disease, to celebrate the survivors, and to pay tribute to those who had to stop fighting.

In 2017, Willie participated in the Sorbet Painted Pink campaign and, as luck would have it, he won the October competition. This victory was more than just a win; it was a platform to raise awareness about cancer. Although Sorbet does this every year, Willie decided to broaden it in his own way. Since then, Willie has continued to participate in the campaign every year, using his story and his pink-painted nails to spread awareness and encourage others to get regular check-ups. His dedication has inspired many, and his personal struggle has become a beacon of hope and resilience for others facing similar challenges.

Let’s walk this road together,

hand in hand,
step by step on life’s winding way.

With love as our compass,
and shoes that fit the journey,
we’ll leave footprints that prove we were here.

Together we’ll walk this road,
hand in hand.

Even when the road looks strange and wide,
we’ll keep looking ahead.

And when we stand face to face
with challenges that feel like mountains,
we’ll keep climbing in faith,
because God is guiding us.

Together we’ll walk this road,
hand in hand.

Instead of stepping back,
we’ll take two steps forward.

Because that’s who we are -
the brave ones who leave a trail.

We walk away from what steals our peace.
Together we’ll walk this road,
hand in hand.

This journey is more than the roads we take,
more than dust or gravel underfoot.

It’s about the ones who stayed
when life was unreasonably hard.

Together we’ll walk this road,
hand in hand,

with heart, with strength, with hope.

Hold on.
Your path is open.

In General

There are people who think that Cancer and Cancer treatment is just a money making gimmick.

It is understandable that such thought patterns may exist about cancer and its treatment. This is a very complicated and emotional issue that can evoke various perceptions. It is important to recognize that cancer is a reality that has a major impact on individuals' lives and health.

Cancer is a disease that affects millions of people around the world and affects their lives. Cancer treatment is often intensive and expensive, but it is not a money-making gimmick. Behind the treatment is scientific research, medical innovation and the drive to save lives and alleviate suffering.

It is important to be supportive and understanding of those dealing with this struggle, and to remember that behind each person's struggle lies a human story.

Statistics

Women make up 51.3% of the cancers diagnosed in South Africa, while men accounted for 48.6%. The average age at diagnosis of cancer was 59 years for women and 64 years for men. Nevertheless, the average age at death from cancer was 62 for women and 64 for men, indicating that cancer in men may be diagnosed at more advanced stages than in women. (Ps. Yes - Men can also get Breast Cancer)
